INESC TEC collaborates with Japanese Honda to create robot with "super-hearing"
Imagine that the TV is on and the kids are playing in certain room. To add to the noise caused by these two situations, the doorbell rings. Can this sound be detected by a robot? A group of researchers responsible for creating the HEARBO robot, among which is João Oliveira of INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), ensures that the answer is yes.
Conclusion of project REIVE: INESC TEC is world leader in Smart grids
On 20 December, INESC TEC marked the conclusion of one of the most emblematic projects at INESC TEC led by the Power Systems Unit (USE), and involving also INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) and the R&D partners LNEG e o CEEETA-ECO.
Portal for senior citizens highlighted at International Conference
The portal e-mili@, developed by INESC TEC, was presented at the International Conference for Ageing and Social Innovation, which took place on 19 and 20 November, at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon.
INESC TEC technology highlighted at EMAF 2012
From 21 to 24 November, INESC TEC participated in the 14th edition of EMAF - International Trade Fair for Machinery, Equipment and Services Industry, which took place at Exponor in Porto. At this Fair, INESC TEC highlighted the areas of manufacturing and logistics, robotics and intelligent systems, and optoelectronics in a booth shared with the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management (INEGI), thus strengthening the relationship between the institutions.
INESC TEC researchers at MIT and CMU
Four researchers from the Innovation and Technology Transfer Unit (UITT) and the Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) are developing their PhD theses at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (as part of the MIT Portugal Program) and at Carnegie Mellon University (as part of the CMU Portugal Program).
INESC TEC researcher awarded in two conferences
Carlos Soares, a researcher at the Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) at INESC TEC, received a Best Paper Award for two articles in which he describes the application of metalearning techniques to two different tasks: a priori selection of parameters for Support Vector Machines and selection of models for continuous flows of data (data streams).
INESC TEC creates painting robot that sees and learns
INESC TEC is part of a consortium which has developed a robotised painting system - the SMARTPAINT – that is able to "see" and imitate the movements of factory workers.

New Portuguese app allows you to create music on your iPad
Piano, trumpet, double bass and drums – these are the four instruments at your disposal in the new music app developed by INESC TEC called GimmeDaBlues. This app for iPod, iPhone and iPad promises to revolutionise the interaction with virtual music instruments as it does not require music training: the end result always sounds good. The GimmeDaBlues became available at Apple’s AppStore in the beginning of December 2012.
Maths helps mobiles & tablets match eyes ability to switch from sunshine to shadow
Researchers have pushed the boundaries of High Dynamic Range (HDR) video to match our own eyes' ability to cope with the real world's ever rapidly changing light intensity - such as sun simply going behind clouds. Now researchers at WMG at the University of Warwick, have found a way to compress and stream HDR video directly to monitors and mobile devices, such as an iPad, bringing enormous benefits to industries including gaming and security.
HEARBO Robot Has Superhearing
We live in a world of sounds, full of beautiful music, birds chirping, and the voices of our friends. It's a rich cacophony, with blaring beeps, accented alarms, and knock-knock jokes. The sound of a door opening can alert us to a friend's arrival, and a door slamming can alert us to an impending argument.

Young Portuguese entrepreneurs conquer Silicon Valley
Bewarket is the name of the social trade project created by a group of young Portuguese entrepreneurs. The project was highlighted at the “Portugal Inovador” (Innovative Portugal) pavilion of the “Plug and Play Tech Center”, the largest incubator at Silicon Valley. By the end of the year, the Portuguese team wants to become stronger in California and obtain a North American venture capital investment.
Robotics Route – ‘Porto City of Science’
On 30 November and 1 December, INESC TEC will be participating in the “Robotics Route”, an initiative promoted by the Câmara Municipal do Porto (Porto City Council), through the Porto Social Foundation – ‘Porto City of Science’.
FEUP/INESC TEC robotic sailboat wins international competition
The FAST sailboat, created by students and researchers from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and INESC TEC’s Robotics ad Intelligent Systems Unit (ROBIS), has won the title of ‘Robotic Sailboats’ world champion. The sailboat won first place in the 5th World Robotic Sailing Championship, which took place between 17 and 21 September in Cardiff, Whales. The participation in this event was supported by FEUP, INESC TEC, the AFCEA Educational Foundation (as part of the "Science Teaching Tools" programme), the Clube Naval de Leça and the Escola Naval da Marinha.
Experts discuss regional innovation at event organised by INESC TEC
Regional innovation policies – this was the main theme of the international seminar organised by INESC TEC that brought to the city of Porto 120 experts from all over the world.
INESC TEC signs protocol with the University of Minh
The University of Minho (UMinho) is officially part of INESC TEC – INESC Technology and Science, a leading associate laboratory which hosts 12 R&D units and 600 researchers. The complex in Minho is called HASLab – High Assurance Software Laboratory, in Braga, which was created in 2010. The protocol was signed as part of the 37th anniversary of the University of Minho’s School of Engineering.

INESC TEC at the European Researchers’ Night
On 28 September, the University of Porto (U.Porto) organised in Porto the “European Researchers’ Night – NEI 2012”, which was dedicated this year to the theme “The Body”. INESC TEC joined this initiative, which took place simultaneously in more than 30 European countries. At this event, those who visited the Reitoria building of U.Porto had the opportunity to get familiarised with some of the research projects and innovative products developed at the Associate Laboratory.
