INESC TEC researchers integrate restricted group of Portuguese authors in renowned journal
José Nuno Oliveira, a researcher at INESC TEC’s High-Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab), published a paper in the prestigious journal IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering last March. The paper was co-written with Miguel Ferreira, a former Master’s Degree student at the University of Minho. This is the second group composed of exclusively Portuguese researchers to publish in this journal, even though this is an area –Software Engineering – in which practically all universities have active groups.
INESC TEC integrates European project on smart grids
INESC TEC has recently integrated the team of the European project ELECTRA – European Liaison on Electricity grid Committed Towards long-term Research Activities. This is an integrated research project (IRP) on smart grids where the main goal is to strengthen the EERA Joint Programme on Smart Grids. The project duration is 48 months.
INESC TEC creates an app that promotes intelligent refuse collection
How is it possible to make refuse collection more efficient and economical? Three researchers from INESC TEC’s Information and Computer Graphics Systems Unit (USIG) are trying to provide an answer to that question with the CleanMyCity. This is an app to manage refuse collection, developed as part of APSAT, a European project that wants to demonstrate the efficiency of innovative satellite services, allowing communities to promote develop sustainably.
INESC TEC provides services to startup Grabmark
The lack of tools to support collaborative studies was the motivation to create Grabmark, a platform for students to share and exchange study material. After winning a place in IdeaMove, a competition of business ideas promoted by the TEC-Empreende project, the new start-up has received the support of the Innovation and Technology Transfer Unit (UITT) at INESC TEC to develop and implement the business project.
INESC TEC highlighted in the Balkans
Nuno Fidalgo, a researcher at INESC TEC’s Power Systems Unit (USE), has recently travelled to Sarajevo, in Bosnia-Herzegovina, to provide consulting services on Load Research, in cooperation with the Regulatory and Energy Assistance Project (REAP), an initiative sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
INESC TEC tests broadband radio solution for remote locations
INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) has recently tested a solution that provides two-way broadband access based on long-range point-to-point WiFi connections. The field tests were conducted within an R&D contract with Portuguese company Sinuta SA as part of project WISAT - Development of passive devices for both VSAT and MIMO PtP bridging applications.

INESC TEC joins network of excellence of European laboratories
Following the establishment of the Laboratory of Microgeneration and Electric Vehicles, INESC TEC will be joining the DERlab - European Distributed Energy Resources Laboratories, an association that gathers the most important laboratories and research institutes in the areas of distributed energy resources. INESC TEC is the first Portuguese institution to be part of this network.
INESC TEC publishes record number of scientific papers
INESC TEC, with its close to 700 researchers, from which 230 have a PhD degree, continues to maintain a high level of excellence in the science and technology produced. Proof of that is the exponential increase in the publication of scientific papers.
INESC TEC technology in the skies
The European project DAPHNE, in the area of optical fibre communication systems for civil aircraft, which involved INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), has reached a conclusion in February. In the future, airlines and passengers will be benefiting from a more modern communication network in aircrafts. UTM’s contribution has impressed the project’s foreign partners and gave proof of the Unit’s increasing competences in optical and microwave communications.
Director at INESC TEC wins IEEE excellence award
Last March, Vladimiro Miranda, director of INESC Porto (the entity coordinating the INESC TEC Associate Laboratory), was elected to receive the IEEE Power & Energy Society Ramakumar Family Renewable Energy Excellence Award. The researcher, distinguished for fostering and implementing large scale renewable sources integration, will be receiving his award in July, in a ceremony that will take place in Vancouver, Canada.
