INESC TEC tests broadband radio solution for remote locations

INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) has recently tested a solution that provides two-way broadband access based on long-range point-to-point WiFi connections. The field tests were conducted within an R&D contract with Portuguese company Sinuta SA as part of project WISAT - Development of passive devices for both VSAT and MIMO PtP bridging applications.

WISAT tries to respond to the growing need for broadband services in geographically remote areas. Benefiting from the Unit’s expertise in microwave engineering, researchers at UTM were able to develop prototypes and devices for passive microwave components.

More specifically, the researchers created and antenna feeder and a coaxial-cable-to-waveguide converter, for 5GHz band, which can be used for WiFI transmissions taking advantage of MIMO technology. The design process was assisted by computer simulations using specialised software for electromagnetic devices and antennas. The technology also required the components to be manufactured and characterised in an anechoic chamber.

These devices were recently submitted to a number of field tests which confirmed the researchers’ high expectations as it was possible to establish a 100 Mbit/s broadband connection for distances above 20 Km using offset antennas manufactured by SINUTA. This is an important advantage comparatively to commercial products because the same feeder can be used for antennas with different sizes. The tests were conducted with 65, 70 and 75 cm diameter antennas.

The product has already been presented to the market by SINUTA in March at an international trade fair. Mass production will start soon. Due to the success of the project, UTM is hoping to sign new contracts soon with SINUTA in order to broaden the company’s offer in this market segment.

SINUTA SA is leader in Europe in satellite communications and produces all kinds of satellite dishes.
