INESC TEC concludes project in the music area

INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) has concluded in March the project MIReS - Music Information ReSearch. The aim with this project was to create a roadmap for research on Music Information Retrieval (MIR).

The idea was to provide an overview of the state of the art in this domain and to understand where this subject is heading, proposing general directions according to the opinions of project partners. Above all, the project focused on the future impact that music technology research can have on industry and academia.

The subject of Music Information Retrieval is relevant to any theme related to music. Because we listen to and have access to different types of music, and because our musical tastes change throughout time, MIR technology plays a fundamental role in our musical preferences.

Similarly to other partners, INESC TEC gave different contributions on orientations for the future of MIR research. The UTM team involved in this project included Fabien Gouyon and Carlos Guedes, as well as Marcos Domingues, a former researcher at the same Unit.

The MIReS is an EU FP7 project with a duration of 18 months. The budget for the project was 570 thousand Euros. Other than INESC TEC, the consortium included the following members; MTG - Music Technology Group, Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona, Spain), STROMATOLITE,  Stromatolite Design Lab (London, UK), OFAI, the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (Vienna, Austria), the IRCAM – Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (Paris, France), the C4DM - Centre for Digital Music, Queen Mary University of London (UK) and the BMAT – Barcelona Music and Audio Technology (Barcelona, Spain).
