INESC R&D Brazil on the path for consolidation
Formalised only seven months ago, INESC R&D Brazil is now on the path for consolidation. The steps formalised with the Brazilian academy and industry are still shy, but as a child takes its first steps, there is enough determination to “shake” the market of the sister country and to boost INESC TEC’s technological activity in Portugal.
INESC TEC researchers awarded by FEUP
Eight INESC TEC researchers were awarded by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), as part of the celebrations of the Faculty Day, which took place on 16 January. José Ruela, former manager of INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) was also honoured at the ceremony.
Awards received in 2012 are proof of INESC TEC’s high level research
In 2012, BIP featured several (good) news about researchers awarded for their work in different components. Literary awards, Best Papers Awards, winning projects and other distinctions, they all illustrate the research potential of this Associate Laboratory. The BIP team made a list of last year’s awards and we came up with a staggering number of 31 awards received by our collaborators. It is safe to say that excellence lives at INESC TEC!

Innovation by INESC TEC confirms focus on internationalisation
The Innovation and Technology Transfer Unit (UITT) has been confirming a clear focus on internationalisation and proof of that is the contract in Lithuania and in Chile.
A new painting robot that sees and learns
FLUPOL is the first Portuguese company to adopt a robotic painting system that uses artificial vision to reproduce the movements performed by a specialised worker in a robot (industrial manipulator). This technology, developed by a Portuguese consortium, will spare skilled workers of repetitive manual tasks and minimise contact with aggressive environments (paints, solvents). By saving the eight years required to train a skilled worker, FLUPOL will accelerate the internationalisation of production units to Brazil.

INESC TEC collaborates with Japanese Honda to create robot with "super-hearing"
Imagine that the TV is on and the kids are playing in certain room. To add to the noise caused by these two situations, the doorbell rings. Can this sound be detected by a robot? A group of researchers responsible for creating the HEARBO robot, among which is João Oliveira of INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), ensures that the answer is yes.
Conclusion of project REIVE: INESC TEC is world leader in Smart grids
On 20 December, INESC TEC marked the conclusion of one of the most emblematic projects at INESC TEC led by the Power Systems Unit (USE), and involving also INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) and the R&D partners LNEG e o CEEETA-ECO.
