INESC TEC paper wins third place in competition for young researchers
Two researchers from INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) won third place in the Young Investigator Competition, sponsored by the International Federation of Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE), with their paper “Towards a Dependable Cardiovascular Surveillance System”.
INESC TEC researchers win “Fumio Harashima Best Paper Award in Factory Automation”
Paulo Portugal and Francisco Vasques, researchers at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), won the “Fumio Harashima Best Paper Award in Factory Automation”, with their paper titled “GLHOVE: A Framework for Uniform Coverage Monitoring using Cluster-Tree Wireless Sensor Networks”.
INESC TEC researcher leads best Portuguese startup of the year
AuditMark, a company incubated at the University of Porto’s Science and Technology Park and led by Pedro Fortuna, a researcher at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), was considered the best Portuguese startup of the year by EuroCloud Portugal. The young company located in the city of Porto was chosen for its groundbreaking work in the area of web application code protection.
INESC TEC researcher is the new president of ISMIR
Fabien Gouyon, a researcher at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) is the new President-Elect of The International Society for Music Information Retrieval (ISMIR) for 2014/2015. The researcher will hold this position until he becomes president of the association in 2016/2017.
INESC TEC researcher is President of the Portuguese Association for Pattern Recognition
On 1 November, Jaime Cardoso, researcher at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), was chosen to be the new president of the Portuguese Association for Pattern Recognition (APRP). The election was held during the general meeting of the APRP, as part of the National Conference on Pattern Recognition (RECPAD), in which the UTM participated.
INESC TEC team wins competition on methods to detect liveness in the iris
A team of researchers from INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) won the “LivDet Iris 2013” competition, which took place between June and July of this year. As part of the competition, participants compared different methodologies to detect liveness in iris recognition systems. The results were announced at the “IEEE BTAS 2013- Biometrics: Theory, Applications and Systems”, which took place in the United States between 29 September and 2 October.
Kinematix opens Boston office, raises $2.6M Series B
Portugal-based Kinematix announced Tuesday it has raised $2.6 million in Series B funding and opened its U.S. headquarters in Boston. The company offers health and fitness products that evaluate body position and movement.
Best Iberian dissertation belongs to INESC TEC researcher
José Luís Silva, a researcher at INESC TEC’s High Assurance Software (HASLab), is the winner of the 1st edition of the AISTI award (Iberian Association of Information Systems and Technology) for “Best Iberian Dissertation on Information Systems and Technology”. The INESC TEC researcher was the winner in a total of 27 applications.
LIAAD/INESC TEC wins 1st place in finances and data mining competition
A team with members from INESC TEC’s Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD) and from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto (FEP) has recently won a competition on credit rating as part of the conference BRICS-CCI & CBIC 2013 - Countries Congress on Computational Intelligence, which took place between 3 June and 19 August. The results were announced during the conference’s closing session in Brazil on 10 September.
INESC TEC starts project on mobile robotics
In September, INESC TEC’s Robotics and Intelligent Systems Unit (ROBIS) kicked off European project CARLoS – CooperAtive Robot for Large Spaces manufacturing, where the goal is to develop and apply robotics in shipyards. The kick off meeting took place on 12 and 13 September in Vigo, Spain, and was attended by representatives of all partners.
Entrepreneurial ideas to create jobs
This year, the LET-In - Laboratory of Technology Companies, a service provided by INESC TEC’s Innovation and Technology Transfer Unit (UITT), is celebrating its sixth anniversary. Last year alone, UITT supported the launching of six technology-based companies.
INESC TEC develops tools to support the operation of distribution systems
On 1 September, INESC TEC’s Power Systems Unit (USE) kicked off a new European project where the goal is to develop tools that will allow the distribution system operators to overcome the challenges inherent to managing power grids with a significant integration of new distributed resources, including microgeneration based on renewable energies and electric vehicles.
INESC TEC welcomes delegation from Samsung R&D Institute Poland
On 23 September, INESC TEC welcomed a delegation from Samsung R&D Institute Poland, one of Samsung’s research centres located in Poland. The goal is to promote synergies between the two institutions.
LIAAD/INESC TEC in project with Brazilian institution EMBRAPA
Alípio Jorge, Nuno Escudeiro and Bruno Nogueira, researchers at INESC TEC’s Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD), are collaborating with the Brazilian institution Embrapa Informática Agropecuária and the Institute of Mathematical and Computing Science (ICMC) of the University of São Paulo as part of project Critic@ (Compiling and Recovering Technical and Scientific Information and Promoting Knowledge in the AgroHidro network).
INESC TEC researchers win Best Paper Award
Paulo Portugal and Francisco Vasques, researchers at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), won a Best Paper Award as part of the 11th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics (INDIN 2013), which took place between 29 and 31 July in Germany. This is the most important event in Industrial Informatics and one of the most relevant conferences promoted by one of the largest IEEE Societies, the Industrial Electronics Society.
FEUP/INESC TEC robotic sailboats awarded again in international competition
A team of researchers from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and from INESC TEC’s Robotics and Intelligent Systems Unit (ROBIS) has recently won two awards in the Robotic Sailboat World Championship, which took place between 2 and 6 September in Brest, France.

Institute in Porto develops project to predict the aesthetic outcome of breast-conserving surgery
Porto, 19 Sept. (Lusa) – INESC Porto announced today that the institute is part of an international consortium that is developing a tool to predict the aesthetic outcome of breast cancer surgery, helping women to choose between different treatment options.
Software developed by INESC TEC wins international competition
INESC TEC has developed a software to recognise musical scores that was the winner of a competition organised as part of the ICDAR – International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition. This conference took place in Washington, in the United States, between 25 and 28 August.
Eco-efficiency made in Portugal
Its name is Ecoplanner and it can be used in an industrial environment to identify alternatives that not only have a lower environmental impact but also help reduce manufacturing costs. The Ecoplanner is the first eco-efficiency software developed in Portugal.
