INESC TEC starts project “Mailing Optimization”
In May, INESC TEC’s Centre for Industrial Engineering and Management (CEGI)* kicked-off project “Mailing Optimization” for SONAE MC, a food retailer from the Sonae Group.
INESC TEC co-organises and participates in National Robotics Festival
INESC TEC participated in the IEEE International Conference on Autonomous Robot Systems and Competitions, which took place between 14 and 15 May at the Portuguese city of Espinho, during the 14th edition of the National Robotics Festival.
PhD dissertations by INESCTEC awarded by the Portuguese Optics and Photonics Society
The researchers Susana Silva and Raquel Queirós were awarded by the Portuguese Optics and Photonics Society with a best PhD thesis and an honourable mention, respectively, for their doctoral studies in Physics at the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP). The researchers concluded their doctoral studies in 2013 while doing research at INESC TEC’s Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP)*.

INESC TEC helps implement innovative assembly line
INESC TEC is part of the Production Technologies Cluster (PRODUTECH), which demonstrated the new assembly line of the company ADIRA, the ADIRA Production System. The entire manufacturing system was designed and implemented with innovative technology, including software to optimise production and autonomous vehicles that supply each work station with the materials necessary to assemble customised orders. INESC TEC’s Centre for Enterprise Systems Engineering (CESE) and Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CROB)* developed almost the entire manufacturing system.
INESC TEC and EDP will formalise R&D partnership
INESC TEC and the EDP (Portuguese energy provider) will be signing a programme contract, formalising a partnership for the next three years, where the goal is to develop new solutions and increase technological competitiveness of the EDP both in Portugal and in international markets. The document to support R&D collaboration will be signed on 4 June, in Porto, Portugal.
EU wants to use drones to monitor maritime borders
Project SUNNY gathers 18 companies and research labs from different member states. For 42 months, the partners will be testing networks and sensors that will be used by unmanned aerial vehicles to monitor maritime borders.
Portugal participates in European project to improve surveillance of maritime borders
INESC TEC and the Naval Research Centre of the Portuguese Navy are two of 18 partners of a European project where the goal is to improve the efficiency of maritime border surveillance.
INESC TEC highlights Telecommunications area in Open Day
On 7 May, INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM)* organised an Open Day for companies. Project demonstrations, presentations of success cases and doctoral studies completed the programme of the event that gathered the entire CTM community. The goal was to showcase the quality of the scientific production and innovation capacity at CMT. About 20 companies attended the event that will hopefully lead to new ideas and future partnerships.
MSc dissertation by INESC TEC researcher awarded in Brazil
Carolina Marcelino, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES)*, won the award “Vale-Capes de Ciência e Sustentabilidade 2013” (award for science and sustainability), in the category of “Efficient processes to reduce water and energy consumption.” The researcher received the award for her master’s dissertation titled Otimização de um Sistema de Controle Conjunto de Geração de Energia Hidrelétrica com o emprego de Inteligência Computacional (Optimising a hydroelectric energy system using artificial intelligence), supervised by Paulo Almeida and Elizabeth Wanner.
Would you like to work with NATO?
The Directorate-General for Armament and Defence Infrastructures (Portuguese Ministry of Defence) is organising a seminar to publicise work opportunities with the NATO Support Agency (NSPA). The target-audience of the morning session is the national industry, and the afternoon session is for Portuguese individual candidates. This Seminar will take place as part of the 2014 edition of the Sea Forum (Fórum do Mar), on 28 May, starting at 10 am. Participation is free, but online registration is required until 20 May.
SUNNY Project to Help Improve Effectiveness of EU Border Security
A new European Research Project, co-funded by the European Commission has been launched to enhance the effectiveness of border surveillance activities at the external borders. The Smart UNattended airborne sensor Network for detection of vessels used for cross border crime and irregular entrY (SUNNY) project will run for 42 months contributing towards achieving the objectives of the European Border Surveillance System (EUROSUR). The SUNNY project will develop affordable and interoperable technical capabilities, in particular for detecting and tracking small vessels used by migrants and drug smugglers.
PRODUTECH partnership demonstrates customised manufacturing technology at ADIRA
The Production Technologies Cluster (PRODUTECH) is presenting for the first time the ADIRA PRODUCTION SYSTEM, a new assembly line for ADIRA’s factory, located in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, designed and implemented with innovative manufacturing technology made in Portugal, including manufacturing optimisation and autonomous vehicles that supply every work station with the materials required to assemble customised orders. Making production faster and more flexible will allow this national company to reduce in over 50% the delivery times of completely customised machines.
HASLab/INESC TEC’s Green Software Lab receives international award
HASLab/INESC TEC has received a merit award from the North-American company National Instruments (NI). The company awarded HASLab’s for its credible research line and innovative ideas developed in the area of green software computing, which can be applied to NI’s LabView software.
Maritime Safety with Unmanned Vehicles highlighted at the Sea Fair
INESC TEC, the European Defence Agency and the Portuguese Ministry of Defence have joined to organise, for the first time in Portugal, the Workshop on European Unmanned Maritime Systems. Focusing on the theme of Maritime Safety, this is the third edition of the workshop where the goal is to present technology and other research results, with civillian and military applications, developed as part of the programme of the European Defence Agency for Unmanned Maritime Systems and other European initiatives.

This month, INESC R&D Brazil marks two years of activity. At the Annual General Meeting, which took place on 14 April in São Paulo, the representatives presented and discussed the annual report for the year 2013, the strategic plan and activities for 2014 and the budget for 2015.

Kinematix working with English rugby champions
The Portuguese start-up Kinematix is working with the Leicester Tigers, current champions of the English rugby championship, in order to monitor the muscular activity and repetitive actions of the players. The goal is to prevent injuries. With a branch office Boston, the company wants to take its technology to American football teams.
CISTER/INESC TEC participates in project to validate critical systems
INESC TEC’s Research Centre in Real-Time and Embedded Computing Systems (CISTER) is one of the partners in project V-SIS (“Validation of Critical Systems”), where the goal is to address the challenge of validating critical systems by creating a centre of competence that will deal with the changes and the evolution of critical systems caused by normative evolutions.
