INESC TEC wins international competition on optimal power flow problem solving
INESC TEC was the grand winner of the international competition “Application of Modern Heuristic Optimization Algorithms for Solving Optimal Power Flow Problems”, promoted by the Power & Energy Society of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). Vladimiro Miranda, director of INESC TEC, and Leonel Carvalho, researcher at the Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES), competed with an original meta-heuristic approach created at INESC TEC which proved to be the best.
MIRES: from EU project for music industry roadmap to global Music Tech Festival
As part of the EU-funded scientific project MIRES, INESC TEC has participated in the development of a roadmap about the future of music technology research. INESC TEC is the only Portuguese partner involved in the project. The roadmap is available at http://www.mires.cc/files/MIRES_Roadmap_ver_1.0.0.pdf. Due to its innovative features, this initiative has been highlighted by the European Commission, more specifically at the official webpage of Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the European Commission. The Music Tech Fest, one of the most important results of this project, was launched in London in 2012. In 2014, the event will take place in various cities, such as Wellington, Boston, Berlin, Paris and New York.
INESC TEC helps implement innovative assembly line
INESC TEC is part of the Production Technologies Cluster (PRODUTECH), which demonstrated the new assembly line of the company ADIRA, the ADIRA Production System. The entire manufacturing system was designed and implemented with innovative technology, including software to optimise production and autonomous vehicles that supply each work station with the materials necessary to assemble customised orders. INESC TEC’s Centre for Enterprise Systems Engineering (CESE) and Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CROB)* developed almost the entire manufacturing system.
NESC TEC highlights maritime safety at the Sea Forum
INESC TEC has once again participated in the Sea Forum, which took place between 28 and 30 May, at EXPONOR, in Portugal. At the event, the institute from Porto had the opportunity to showcase its competences in unmanned systems – used to improve maritime safety and to reduce cross border irregular entries – by organising two workshops on the theme. Other highlights included the NATO seminar, also supported by INESC TEC, the TEC4SEA, an offshore lab led by INESC TEC, and the signing of a protocol with the Portuguese Ministry of Defence.
INESC TEC Summer School brings dozens of young people to Porto
INESC TEC was responsible for organising the second edition of the VISion Understanding and Machine intelligence (visum) Summer School, a summer school in artificial intelligence and computer vision.
INESC TEC has already submitted more than 50 projects to Horizon 2020
In the first semester of 2014, INESC TEC submitted over 50 proposals to Horizon 2020 – the European Union’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. The applications were submitted in different areas, with an emphasis on the following calls: Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) with 15 projects submitted; Factories of the Future (FoF), with seven applications; Low Carbon Energy (LCE), with five proposals; Nanotechnologies, Advanced Materials and Production (NMP) and Energy Efficiency (EE), both with three projects submitted.
Infrastructures led by INESC TEC chosen for FCT’s national roadmap
Five infrastructures in which INESC TEC participates have been chosen (after previous evaluation and hearing) to integrate the National Roadmap of Research Infrastructures of Strategic Interest for 2014-2020 (RNIE) of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Two of these infrastructures are led by INESC TEC: the Smart Grids and Electric Vehicles Laboratory (SGEVL) and the TEC4SEA, a modular Platform for researching, testing and validating technologies to support a sustainable economy for the Sea.
INESC TEC participates in Robotics Exercises 2014
Between 30 June and 4 July, INESC TEC participated in the REX2014 - Robotics Exercises, which took place at the Lisbon Naval Base (Alfeite/Almada). As in previous years, the goal with the initiative was to test and demonstrate robotic (and related areas) technologies for operations in aquatic environments in the areas of defence, security, search and rescue, maritime surveillance or monitoring.
INESC TEC director invited for the scientific council of IRESEN
Vladimiro Miranda, director of INESC TEC, has been invited to integrate the scientific council of IRESEN - Institut de Recherche en Energie Solaire et Energies Nouvelles, an agency of the Moroccan Ministry of Energy, Mining, Water and Environment, which started collaborating with INESC TEC last year, more specifically in project SECRETS (Sustainable Energy Clusters REalized Through Smart Grids).
CISTER/INESC TEC leads European project on predictable parallel programming in many-core processors
Assessing and maintaining the performance and predictability of many-core processors (with dozens of cores) is the purpose of project P-SOCRATES (Parallel SOftware framework for time-CRitical mAny-core sysTEmS), a European project led by the Research Centre in Real-Time and Embedded Computing Systems (CISTER), an associate unit of INESC TEC. The first stage of the project, which started in October 2013, is now over, and the project received a positive evaluation in the first review meeting, which took place on 15 May in Barcelona, Spain.
