INESC TEC participates in Robotics Exercises 2014

Between 30 June and 4 July, INESC TEC participated in the REX2014 - Robotics Exercises, which took place at the Lisbon Naval Base (Alfeite/Almada). As in previous years, the goal with the initiative was to test and demonstrate robotic (and related areas) technologies for operations in aquatic environments in the areas of defence, security, search and rescue, maritime surveillance or monitoring.

This year the exercises focused mainly on preparing the final demonstration of the European project ICARUS (Integrated Components for Assisted Rescue and Unmanned Search operations) in a maritime environment, which will take place next year at Arsenal do Alfeite. In this project, INESC TEC, in collaboration with the Portuguese Navy, is responsible for developing and integrating robotic technologies for rescue operations at sea, including robotic capsules for rescue operations, systems to detect shipwrecks and navigation of surface robotic vehicles.

Besides the ICARUS project, other technologies were tested and demonstrated involving INESC TEC’s Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CROB), the Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM) and the Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics (CSIG): robotic aerial, surface and underwater vehicles; technologies for navigation, obstacle detection, environmental mapping, detection of victims in the water; underwater positioning, detection of underwater acoustic sources, automatic filming underwater, underwater and surface radio communications system; command and control systems for robotic vehicles.

The initiative was supported by projects ICARUS and Mission Planning (EDA) for the sea area, in particular through its multidisciplinary platform, the TEC4SEA, which promotes R&D activities and tests technology and robotic solutions for the sea, as well as telecommunications and sensors for monitoring and operating in the ocean.
