INESC TEC researchers awarded in Chemistry conference

The poster “MIPs-based e-tongue for the detection of quaternary ammonium salts”, created by João Paulo Barbosa, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP)*, has recently received an Honourable Mention. The poster was presented at the 4th Portuguese Young Chemists Meeting (4th PYCheM), which took place in Coimbra between 29 April and 1 May.

The poster, co-authored by Gerardo Aguilar (also researcher at CAP), and Maria João Sottomayor (from the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto) focuses on the detection of harmful substances in the human food chain, specifically quaternary ammonium salts. These contaminants are used massively in common toiletries, cleaning products and disinfectants, as well as in the food industry, for instance in vegetables and honey. This poster is part of project SNIFFER (Sensory devices network for food supply chain security), a 7th Framework Programme project on food safety.

The goal with the fourth edition of PYCheM was not only to disseminate scientific work in the Chemistry area developed by young Portuguese and foreign researchers, but also to reinforce the connection between scientific research and industry.
