INESC TEC adopts output evaluation model of the European Space Agency
In order to evaluate the technology readiness of its scientific outputs, as part of the FCT’s evaluation, which took place in late 2014, INESC TEC has adopted the model of the European Space Agency. This model uses a scale of TRL – Technology Readiness Levels, which define the maturity of technology developed within each R&D project, always aiming to transfer technology to the market.

INESC TEC paper receives “Best Student Paper Award”
The paper “oAdaBoost – An AdaBoost Variant for Ordinal Classification”, written by João Costa (former collaborator) and Jaime Cardoso, of INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), received a “Best Student Paper Award” at the 2015 International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods (ICPRAM).
Portuguese technology plays fundamental role in sports
National sports are not just made of athletes and coaches. Outside the fields, the Porto-based startup, Kinematix, has been playing a pivotal role in sports by creating medical systems that make it possible to improve the performance of athletes or prevent injuries. The Portuguese technology has already been used by the Chelsea FC team.
State University “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” joins INESC Brazil Network
The State University “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” (UNESP) is the most recent member of the INESC Brazil Network, a cooperation for research, development and innovation managed by INESC P&D Brasil (IB, INESC R&D Brazil). This was confirmed at the agreement signing ceremony, at the Reitoria of UNESP, in São Paulo, which welcomed the University’s Vice-President Marilza Cunha Rudge, and the Director-President of INESC P&D Brasil, Vladimiro Miranda.
Carlos Moedas visits INESC TEC
On 12 December, the European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, Carlos Moedas, was at INESC TEC as part of a visit to Research Units within the University of Porto. This was the first official visit since the commissioner took office.

INESC TEC researcher is associate editor of journal on audio, speech, and language processing
Matthew Davies, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), was appointed associate editor of IEEE/ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing. Matthew Davies is now one of the members of the editorial board that will be coordinating the publication of this journal on audio, speech and language processing over the next three years.
INESC TEC studies application of new immersive functionalities in different scenarios

The prestigious State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), located in the State of São Paulo, has recently joined the INESC Brazil Network. The partnership between INESC TEC and INESC P&D Brasil (INESC R&D Brazil) was signed by UNICAMP’s director.
FCT rates INESC TEC as “Excellent”
After the second evaluation stage of R&D Units, conducted by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), INESC TEC was rated as "Excellent", obtaining a score of 24 points (out of 25). As a result, INESC TEC will be receiving almost 2.6 million euros/year.

Jorge Freire de Sousa, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Industrial Engineering and Management (CEGI), was invited to join the editorial board of the new journal Transportation Research Procedia (TRPRO).
INESC TEC creates knowledge platform for the Galicia-North of Portugal Euroregion
INESC TEC’s Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics designed a webpage for the European group for cross-border cooperation between Galicia and the North of Portugal (GNP-AECT). Called Euroregion Information Office (GIE), the webpage contains information on the Euroregion.

Portuguese researchers develop maritime search and rescue technology
According to the news website Ciência 2.0, a team from the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering – Technology and Science (INESC TEC) is leading the development of maritime search and rescue technology. This technology is being developed as part of project ICARUS – Integrated Components for Assisted Rescue and Unmanned Search operations, and will be demonstrated in Portugal in the summer of next year.
Work developed at INESC TEC receives Best Master Thesis Award
The paper “Analysis of expressiveness of Portuguese Sign Language Speakers”, written by Maria Inês Rodrigues, former collaborator at INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), received the 2014 Best Master Thesis Award from the Portuguese Association for Pattern Recognition (APRP).
Portuguese researchers develop maritime search and rescue technology
A team from the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering of Porto – Science and Technology (INESC TEC) is leading the development of technologies to support search and rescue operations at sea in the context of the European project ICARUS – Integrated Components for Assisted Rescue and Unmanned Search operations. The maritime component will be demonstrated in Portugal in the summer of 2015.
INESC TEC researchers are finalists in the “Fraunhofer Portugal Challenge 2014”
Gilberto Bernardes and Pydi Ganga, both researchers at INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), have come second and third, respectively, in the competition “Fraunhofer Portugal Challenge 2014”, in the PhD category.
