Thesis and paper by INESC TEC researchers awarded
Luís Guimarães, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Industrial Engineering and Management (CEGI), has received the award for best 2013 and 2014 PhD thesis (award given every two years) and best 2015 scientific paper, as part of the APDIO Congress – Portuguese Association for Operational Research (IO2015), which took place between 7 and 9 September at the Management School of the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre.

INESC TEC develops first deep sea robotic platform made in Portugal
INESC TEC has developed the first underwater robotic platform for the deep sea which has been completely developed in Portugal, in partnership with Portuguese companies. Project TURTLE - Technologies for long-term presence in the deep sea kicked off in 2014.
INESC TEC researchers simulate catastrophes in Europe
A team of researchers from INESC TEC have tested the intelligence and the autonomy of their robots in catastrophe simulation scenarios. The group represented Portugal in the euRathlon, the largest robotics competition in Europe, which took place between 17 and 25 September in Piombino (Livorno, Italy).
INESC TEC team is finalist of the Wagner Prize in the United States
A team from INESC TEC’s Centre for Industrial Engineering and Management (CEGI) is a finalist of the Daniel H. Wagner Prize for Excellence in the Practice of Operations Research, organised by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) in the United States, together with other international researchers and companies, including Ford Motor Company, in partnership with University of Michigan, the French postal services La Poste, in conjunction with the MIT and WHU-Otto Beisheim School of Management, and CSX Transportation, in partnership with the University of Illinois.

Portuguese researcher wins award for best PhD thesis
For the first time ever, a Portuguese researcher has won the award for the best PhD thesis in the world in the area of entrepreneurship. The winner is Sérgio Costa, researcher at the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC).
INESC TEC participates in final demonstration of project CARloS
Between 25 and 27 August, INESC TEC participated in the final demonstration of European project CARloS - CooperAtive Robot for Large Spaces manufacturing, which took place in La Coruña, Spain. The prototype of the robot was successfully demonstrated at the facilities of the shipyards “Astilleros Jose Valiña”, the end user of the technology and one of the project’s partners.
INESC TEC and FCUP organise “Science Fiction Week”
Science in science fiction is the motto for the “SYFY Scientific Review – Science Fiction Week”, which will include one day of films and another day of lectures and discussions. The event is organised by INESC TEC and the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP), and will take place on 17 and 18 September, at FCUP.

João Claro, researcher at the Centre for Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship (CITE) and member of the Board of INESC TEC, and Abílio Pacheco, also researcher at CITE, are co-authors of the paper “Forest fire management to avoid unintended consequences: A case study of Portugal using system Dynamics”, which is, since 2013, mandatory reading in the subject “Introduction to System Dynamics”, at Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
INESC TEC develops solar power forecasting system for distribution networks
INESC TEC’s Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES) has recently started a demonstration, for EDP Distribuição, of an innovative solar power forecasting system, as part of the European Project SuSTAINABLE - Smart Distribution System OperaTion for MAximizing the INtegration of RenewABLE Generation (funded by the 7th Framework-Programme).
Project ICARUS demonstrated in search and rescue operations
On 9 and 10 July, the robots developed as part of project ICARUS were presented at the ICARUS Sea Trials Lisbon 2015, which took place at the Base Naval de Alfeite (Naval Base of Alfeite, Portugal). INESC TEC’s Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CROB) is leading the maritime component, as a result of their experience in aquatic robotics.
North-American researcher at INESC TEC to prepare Digitópia Collective concert
Neil Leonard, Artistic Director of the Interdisciplinary Arts Institute of the Berklee College of Music and Research Affiliate at MIT’s Art, Culture and Technology Program, is at INESC TEC to prepare the Digitópia Collective Concert – the Commemorative Concert of the 30th anniversary of INESC in Porto, which will take place at Casa da Música.
Raul Vidal is Personality of the Year in Software Engineering
The Director of the Department of Computer Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and member of SAPE (Industry Partnership Service) at INESC TEC, Raul Vidal, received the 2015 award for Personality of the Year in Software Engineering.
Portuguese startups raise 60 million dollars’ worth of funding in the USA
José Manuel Mendonça, Chairman of INESC TEC and Scientific Director of the UTEN Portugal Program, travelled to the University of Texas at Austin, USA, with a group of startup companies as part of the Global Startup Program. The goal is to support Portuguese startups through partnerships and American capital. Some of the projects have already signed contracts and obtained funding worth a total of 60 million dollars.
INESC TEC participates in project to control quality of frying oils
INESC TEC’s Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics (CSIG) and Centre for Applied Photonics are involved in a project – together with AMBIFOOD, the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto (FFUP) and ASAE’s (health and safety authority) Chemistry Laboratory – where the goal is to create technology to control the quality of frying oils. This work has an impact on public health as there is a causal link between the ingestion of oils used for frying food, their degradation, and the emergence of certain pathologies.
Pedro Guedes de Oliveira gives last lesson
On 29 June, Pedro Guedes de Oliveira, Full Professor at FEUP and former President of INESC TEC, gave his last lesson.
New governing model and generational renewal at INESC TEC
On 8 June, the new Associate Bodies of INESC TEC were elected as part of the General Council Meeting.
