Spin-off company created by HASLab/INESC TEC is finalist in the COHiTEC initiative
The spin-off Dependableware, created by researchers at HASLab – High-Assurance Software Laboratory, a Privileged Partner of INESC TEC located in the University of Minho (U.Minho), was one of the finalists of the COHiTEC initiative, promoted by COTEC Portugal. This U.Minho spin-off developed database management software which is more flexible, reliable, scalable and profitable comparatively to the solutions available on the market.

INESC Porto organises ISAP conference in 2015
INESC Porto will be organising the next edition of the prestigious conference Intelligent System Applications to Power System (ISAP), which will take place between 20 and 23 September 2015. The ISAP is an international conference on the use of intelligent systems in electric power systems.
INESC TEC welcomes research centre from Morocco
On 5 July, INESC TEC welcomed a delegation from the Institut de Recherce en Energie Solaire et en Energies Nouvelle (IRESEN) from Rabat, Morocco. The visit took place after the IRESEN showed interest in INESC TEC’s areas of expertise. The goal is for both institutions to collaborate in projects in the future.
INESC TEC welcomes Brazilian company TAESA
On 27 June, INESC TEC welcomed a delegation of the Transmissora Aliança de Energia Elétrica S.A (TAESA), one of the largest power transmission companies in Brazil that creates, operates and maintains transmission assets.
INESC TEC researchers win competition on data mining
A team of nine researchers, four of which from INESC TEC, led by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) was the winner of the Filtering task at the data mining competition RepLab 2013, which took place between 15 April and 27 May.
INESC TEC develops project to manage fires more efficiently
INESC TEC is currently developing instruments as part of project FIRE-ENGINE (Designing flexible management systems for forest fires) that will help authorities prevent and suppress fires.
INESC TEC develops 1st Portuguese eco-efficiency software
INESC TEC developed, together with Ecoinside, FEUP and ISA, an IT management platform for eco-efficiency in industrial units that monitors consumptions of energy, water and other resources. Furthermore, in order to suggest more efficient solutions, the platform also measures gas emissions and wastes resulting from manufacturing. The Ecoplanner is now being tested at Sorgal, one of the largest animal feed producing companies in Portugal.
INESC TEC shows progress in project SuSTAINABLE
INESC TEC’s Power Systems Unit (USE), represented by João Peças Lopes and Luís Seca, participated in a meeting of project SuSTAINABLE, which took place on 26 June at the facilities of the University of Manchester, UK. The purpose of this meeting was to define the architecture for the project and to assess the main tasks developed within the first three months of the project.
INESC TEC co-organises international conference on optics and photonics
Between 23 and 26 July, the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP) hosted the RIAO/OPTILAS conference (8th Iberoamerican Conference on Optics and 11th Latin-American meeting on Optics, Lasers and Applications). The event was organised by the Portuguese Society for Photonics, together with the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, FCUP and INESC TEC’s Optoelectronics and Electronic System Unit (UOSE).
INESC TEC researcher receives IEEE award
Jean Sumaili, researcher at INESC TEC’s Power Systems Unit (USE), has received the 2010 award for best PhD dissertation on Power Systems presented at an Italian university. The IEEE PES Italian Chapter 2010 Best PhD Thesis in Power Engineering AWARD was awarded to the dissertation “Current Decomposition-Based Loss Partitioning and Loss Allocation in Distribution Systems”.
INESC TEC takes robots to Italy
From 15 to 19 June, members of INESC TEC’s Robotics and Intelligent Systems Unit (ROBIS) travelled to NATO’s Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), in La Spezia, Italy, to participate in a set of tests as part of project ICARUS (Integrated Components for Assisted Rescue and Unmanned Search operations).

Newly inaugurated Clean Room will enhance INESC TEC’s research on optical fibres
On 12 June, the Micro and Nanofabrication Unit of the Centre of Materials, University of Porto (NMTEC/CEMUP), an infrastructure dedicated to research on materials, inaugurated a new Clean Room. INESC TEC has been a partner of CEMUP and will be one of clean room’s main users.

INESC TEC takes Internet to the waters of the Atlantic
Pioneer project confirms INESC TEC’s know-how in communications INESC TEC has joined the “Porto Digital” Association (APD) to provide free broadband Internet throughout the coast between the cities of Porto and Póvoa de Varzim. INESC TEC and the APD have signed a collaboration protocol as part of the 2013 Sea Fair and the aim is to provide the service in 2014. Mare-Fi is the name of the system created by INESC TEC and it is already installed at the Edifício Transparente in Porto. The system will be testing the wireless communication with the fishing boats in the port of Matosinhos. This is a pioneer project in the world that, at a later stage, will grant Internet access up to five nautical miles (about nine kilometres).
Researcher working in Portugal wins Best Student Paper Award
A paper by Michael Donauer on industrial manufacturing optimisation received a Best Paper Award at the international conference Flexible Automation and Intelligent Manufacturing (FAIM 2013).
