Summer school on artificial intelligence
After the success of the first edition of the Summer School that gathered almost three dozen students from 13 countries in 2013, INESC TEC is once again organising the VISion Understanding and Machine intelligence (Visum) Summer School, in collaboration with the University of Porto and the Faculty of Engineering (FEUP). The Summer School will take place between 3 and 10 July.
INESC TEC provides services to pharmaceutical company
INESC TEC’s Industrial Engineering and Management Unit (UGEI) is currently developing a project to configure the logistics chain of a pharmaceutical wholesaler.
INESC TEC demonstrates medical technology in the United States
On 18 February, the manager of the recently created Centre for Research in Biomedical Engineering (C-BER) at INESC TEC, Aurélio Campilho, presented the RetinaCAD in a workshop that took place in California, in the United States. The RetinaCAD is a computer assisted medical diagnosis tool based on the analysis of images of the retina.
Chilean delegation visits INESC TEC
On 26 February, INESC TEC welcomed a Chilean delegation, from the region of Los Lagos, which is interested in the technology for the sea and aquaculture areas developed at INESC TEC.

INESC TEC starts developing point-to-multipoint system
In January, INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia (UTM) started working on the project “HiperWireless: Point-to-Multipoint Microwave Communications using the 17GHz License-free Band”, where the goal is to develop a point-to-multipoint communication system using the 17 GHz band. The system is composed of a base station and a set of client stations, similar to what is found in a 3G/4G network or a Wi-Fi network, for example.

The footwear industry went beyond that and developed the Highspeed ShoeFactory, a new solution to produce customised footwear in 24 hours that is already installed and being tested at Kyaia, a factory in Guimarães, Portugal.
Young Portuguese researcher receives international award
A young researcher at the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering of Porto won the 2013 ABB Award with his master’s thesis titled "Carregador Bidirecional para Veículos Elétricos Baseado em Andar de Conversão Matricial" (Matrix Converter-based Bidirectional Charger for Electric Vehicles).
