Young Portuguese researcher receives international award

A young researcher at the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering of Porto won the 2013 ABB Award with his master’s thesis titled "Carregador Bidirecional para Veículos Elétricos Baseado em Andar de Conversão Matricial" (Matrix Converter-based Bidirectional Charger for Electric Vehicles).

Diogo Varajão

This award is given by the ABB Portugal to the best master’s students in the areas of renewable energies, industrial automation and robotics.

Diogo Varajão, a natural of the city of Ponte de Lima, Portugal, won the award with his dissertation with a final score of 20 points (out of 20; maximum score). The researcher concluded his thesis in 2012 at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. In the thesis he proposes an electric vehicle charging solution that makes it possible to inject power into the grid.

Diogo Varajão is currently doing a PhD and is lecturing at FEUP, and to boost the growth of the Portuguese economy he defends that the University of Porto’s curriculum should provide entrepreneurship and innovation related subjects.
