Work developed at INESC TEC receives Best Master Thesis Award

The paper “Analysis of expressiveness of Portuguese Sign Language Speakers”, written by Maria Inês Rodrigues, former collaborator at INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), received the 2014 Best Master Thesis Award from the Portuguese Association for Pattern Recognition (APRP).

The thesis was developed as part of her master’s degree in Bioengineering, at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (FEUP), and her traineeship at INESC TEC. The student was advised by CTM researcher Eduardo Marques and Luís Teixeira from FEUP.

The awarded thesis addresses the topic of sign language, its specificities and expression differentials through video analysis.

The award was presented at the closing session of RecPad 2014, which took place on October 31 in Covilhã, Portugal.

One of the goals of the Portuguese Association for Pattern Recognition (APRP) is to promote advances, in theory and in practical applications, in the scientific subject of pattern recognition. For that, the APRP awards the Best Master Thesis and the Best PhD Thesis on pattern recognition, encouraging young Portuguese researchers to disseminate their work.

The INESC TEC researchers mentioned in this article are associated with the following partner institutions: INESC Porto.
