Technology revolutionises musical experience
International Conference in Porto on music technology
8 to 12 October, at the Mosteiro de S. Bento da Vitória (Porto, Portugal)
Did you ever think you could go to a concert where the guitar player is accompanied, directly and improvisationally, by a computer? This is one of the most awaited moments of the 13th Edition of the Conference ISMIR (International Society for Music Information Retrieval), which will take place between 8 and 12 October at the Mosteiro S. Bento da Vitória in Porto, Portugal.
A simple action such as “googling” the name of your favourite artist requires complex algorithms which automate the search engine’s selection of music, news, lyrics and discography. These are the algorithms which teach the computer to recommend music genres or artists based on the music we normally listen to. Artificial intelligence coupled with sound computing is now so advanced that computers are capable of recognising emotions in a music piece or the genre it belongs to. The 13th Edition of the ISMIR Conference will gather more than 250 international experts to discuss these and other innovations which perfectly illustrate the impact that technology can have on musical experience, a trend that should mark the future of this market.
