Project CARLoS originates first prototype of mobile manipulating robot

Between 11 and 12 November, INESC TEC hosted the first integration workshop on project CARLoS (CooperAtive Robot for Large Spaces manufacturing), where the goal is to develop a mobile manipulating robot for fit-out and coating applications, or to be used inside superstructure blocks in ships.

This is the intermediate result of the project, which started in September of last year. The workshop focused on the integration of various subcomponents that were developed last year, including: (1) the mechanical and electrical integration of the mobile manipulators, (2) navigation and localisation, (3) navigation tests with robotic arm, (4) sensor calibration and validation and (5) tests with the man-machine interaction system.

Partners AIMEN Technology Centre and Robotnik Automation SLL (Spain), and Aalborg University (Denmark), also participated in the workshop. The INESC TEC team was represented by Germano Veiga, Elisabete Fernandes, Héber Sobreira, Carlos Costa, Armando Sousa, Hélio Mendonça and José Lima, researchers at the Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CROB), were also present.

Project CARLoS is supported by the European Commission and is being developed by four SMEs and three R&D centres from four different countries.

The INESC TEC researchers mentioned in this article are associated with the following institutions: INESC Porto, FEUP and IPBragança.
