On 1 November, Jaime Cardoso, researcher at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), was chosen to be the new president of the Portuguese Association for Pattern Recognition (APRP). The APRP is a nonprofit association whose purpose is to promote theoretical and practical advances on pattern recognition by organising conferences, meetings and training courses and disseminating scientific or technical information. The RECPAD is one of the major events organized by the APRP. This is a national conference that aims to promote collaborations within the Portuguese scientific community in the areas of Pattern Recognition, Image Analysis and Processing, Computing and related areas. The association is also responsible for the IbPRIA international conference, held every two years and co-organised with the AERFAI (equivalent to the APRP association in Spain), where the goal is to promote innovative work in pattern recognition (and related areas).

For the UTM researcher, “this position in the association is an encouragement to further promote the field of pattern recognition with the Portuguese scientific community”. The next step is to carry out “other initiatives to promote the area, including creating the annual award for the best master's dissertation in pattern recognition (to be announced) and consolidating the association's website because we want it to function as a gate to what is done in Portugal in pattern recognition”, he said.

Besides being researcher at INESC TEC since 1998, where he leads the field of Information Processing and Pattern Recognition, Jaime dos Santos Cardoso is also an assistant professor at FEUP. Jaime Cardoso has a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, with specialisation in Telecommunications (FEUP), a Master’s Degree in Mathematical Engineering (FCUP) and a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering (FEUP).
