INESC TEC participates in project in the area of aeronautics

The Centre for Enterprise Systems Engineering (CESE) at INESC TEC is participating in the Entrepreneurial Research Initiative (ERI) “Innovation Dynamics in Aeronautics and Embraer in Évora: Towards a Distributed Platform for Entrepreneurial Initiatives, New Employment and Skills Development”. This ERI will analyze the increasing complexity and uncertainty of technological advances, supply chains and business settings in the aeronautics industry.

The project follows the installation of two new factories from the Brazilian company Embraer in Évora, Portugal, and its goal is to study the formation of supply chains in the aeronautics industry, technological advances and challenges of this industry, as well as the skills required for factories to become centres of excellence. The idea with the project is to obtain a set of recommendations on how to empower suppliers, new technology-based firms and Portuguese research centres in order to serve the aeronautics sector. Simultaneously, a new web platform will be designed to support processes related to product development, production control and management of complex supply chains. The INESC TEC team involved in this project is composed of Ana Cristina Barros, Cláudio Santos, Dario Messina, António Lucas Soares, Américo Azevedo and Jorge Pinho de Sousa.

With a duration of 48 months and a budget of approximately one million euros, the project is led by Joana Mendonça, at the Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research (IN +), Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon, and Granger Morgan, at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). The consortium also includes the Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IDMEC) at IST, the Centre of Excellence for Innovation in the Automotive Industry (CEIIA), and Embraer Portugal.

The project is one of six ERIS selected as part of the 1st Call for Entrepreneurial Research Initiatives (ERIs) launched by the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program (CMU Portugal), funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

The INESC TEC researchers mentioned in this article are associated with the following partner institutions: INESC Porto and FEUP.
