INESC P&D Brasil and Chilean University define goals for South America

INESC P&D Brasil (IB) and the Metropolitan University of Technology in Chile (UTEM) met between 13 and 16 October in two strategic locations of the INESC Brazil Network. The purpose of this meeting was to continue the activities set out in the agreement signed between IB and UTEM, and design proposals for joint R&D activities in Chile.

UTEM came to Brazil with a very specific agenda to get to know some of the research and development activities conducted at IB, in particular Robotics, Energy, Telecommunications and the Environment. Additionally, the UTEM team expressed particular interest in understanding the relationships within the INESC Brazil Network, where INESC TEC has a strong presence.

The meetings were held at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Federal University of Technology of Paraná (UTFPR) and Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), bringing together researchers from IB working in these three universities and also at the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC).

The exchange of experiences began with a presentation on IB projects, starting with Ana Pinto, who did a presentation on Environment and Health. This was followed by a presentation on Energy, by Issicaba Diego, which focused on Power and Generation. In the Telecommunications area, presented by Hermes Monego, the institutions have found similarities in their research activities, which will be key to bringing them closer together. Following the visit, Marcelo Petry and Leonardo Honório accompanied the Chilean delegation to the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), where discussions focused on robotics. On the Chilean side, opportunities have been identified for IB and the INESC Brazil Network in the areas of Mining, Energy, Salmon Farming and Defence.

One of the immediate outcomes of the meeting was a new workshop specifically designed for Chilean industry and academia, which will be organised by UTEM in Santiago, Chile. At the end of November, some IB researchers will participate in this workshop in order to identify cooperation opportunities with Chilean industry and academia.

The following researchers participated in the meeting: Fernando Ulhoa (UTEM), Jorge Charlin (UTEM), Leonardo Bremermann, Diego Issicaba, Marcelo Petry and Mauro Rosa (IB UTFPR), Ana Pinto (IB-UDESC), Hermes Monego (IB-UTFPR) and Leonardo Honório (IB-UFJF).
